Day 1: Thames to Miranda
Pick up your bikes at our Thames base and ride along mangroves and through flat dairy land to The Miranda Hot Pools. Distance 40 kms. Have a soak and then have a shuttle return you to Thames. Alternatively, visit the nearby Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre and do a stroll to the bird hides on the shore, before the shuttle picks you up. Overnight in Thames.
Day 2: Thames to Paeroa.
Today's ride is 34 kms, again flat. Stop for refreshments and supplies at a boutique cheese factory and cafe, the Cheese Barn. The trail then winds through farmland and small rural communities, between the Hauraki Plains and Coromandel mountain range. Overnight in Paeroa, famous for it's many quirky antique shops.
Day 3: Paeroa to Waihi
Ride today through the very scenic Karangahake Gorge. This part of the trail is only 22 kms but a highlight with and lots to do and see here so you need to take your time. There are walks on offer and tours through the Karangahake Gorge itself and old mining tunnels (bring a torch!), the old stamper batteries, a very scenic waterfall and several wonderful places to have lunch. Overnight in Waihi.
Day 4: Waihi to Te Aroha
Ride back to Paeroa and then on to Te Aroha, through very lush green farmland, a distance of 44 flat kms. You can integrate a historic train ride for the first few kilometres. If you were to make an early start and arrive in Te Aroha around lunchtime, you might want to take a short hike up Whakapipi Lookout (approx. 45min one-way on Mt Te Aroha Summit Track). Alternatively, stroll through the old thermal bath domain and relax in your private pool, or take a walk though the Te Aroha wetlands, a short walk away from the town centre. A shuttle will pick you up around 4 pm to return you to your starting point in Thames.
