Schools and Friends
October 2019 is the 250th anniversary of the first meetings between Maori and Europeans and this will be celebrated by communities and educators throughout New Zealand.
Here in The Coromandel, The Mercury 250 Anniversary Trust was formed to bring together individuals, community groups, event organisers and businesses willing to have input on legacy projects for the 2019 replica Endeavour visit and 250th commemorations in our place.
The Trust has identified three key themes for any projects and events in the Mercury Bay:
· Share: Relationships between Maori and Pakeha (peoples joined)
· Explore: Transit of Mercury and discoveries of science
· Navigate: Guided by the stars, great navigators have found The Coromandel, stayed to explore and to form relationships with the land and people.
The Trust has partnered with the tribe (iwi) Ngati Hei, the local council Thames-Coromandel District Council, and the students and teachers of Mercury Bay Area School in Whitianga to help us inspire our community to share stories of the unique places and people that shaped our nation. Please feel free to contact our partners for more on what they are doing as part of the commemorations.
