Set 50km off the mainland this spectacular natural phenomenon hisses and roars with life with an unimaginable landscape similar to that of the moon. The island can be reached by boat or helicopter or take a fixed wing aircraft flight over it.

Head into the buzzing township of Whakatane and enjoy an array of cafes, restaurants, bars and retail stores to suit all budgets and desires.

Or for those wanting some adrenalin charged action check out the hydroslide at the Whakatane Aquatic Centre or enjoy one of the four stunning golf courses with the ocean as a backdrop.

Don’t leave Whakatane without enjoying the history and culture of the area on one of the world’s finest walkways – Nga Tapuwae o Toi (in the footsteps of Toi). Starting and finishing in Whakatane, this superb 16-kilometre walk takes in sea cliffs, ancient pa site, bird colonies, remote bays, pristine Ohope Beach and unique Pohutukawa forest.
