  • The first gold strike in New Zealand took place in Coromandel Town and it’s colonial architecture acts as a great reminder of this era. Visitors can guide themselves through the buildings and museums on the Heritage Walking Trail to the Gold Stamper Battery or be accompanied by local informative guides.
     
  • Built on the pioneering industries of gold mining and kauri logging, Thames is the largest town in the region. Waihi is an old and existing gold mining town.  The region’s fascinating history can be uncovered by visiting excellent museums in both towns. Visitors can tour a working goldmine in Waihi.
     
  • From Waihi visitors can take a fun and interesting journey aboard an historic vintage train into the impressive Karangahake Gorge with Goldfields Railway.
